About domain names

A domain name is your or your company’s address on the Internet. Domain names represent sequence of characters that user enters into a browser address bar to visit the desired website.

Domain names are attached to DNS servers, which are used to convert digital addresses (known as IP addresses) into words.

Any website on the Internet apart from its name has a numeric IP address, which is a real address of the website on the Internet.

Domain names can be used:

  1. For giving your website easy and memorable address.
    Ex: www.firma.com

  2. For redirection. Ex: if your company name is Produkti.Ukraіna Ltd, you can register a domain www.prodykti.ykraina.ua and shorter and more memorable - www.prodykti.ua. Your website will be available at both addresses.

  3. If you don’t plan to use a domain in any way, however, you want it to belong to you.

What characters can be used?

A domain name can contain only letters of the Latin, Russian, Ukrainian alphabets, numbers and "-" symbol.

What is the right way to choose a domain?

Choosing your own domain name is the first step towards acquirement of a reputation on the web. Your domain name, if correctly chosen, can draw attention to your site and establish credibility on the part of visitors.

The main function of a domain name is to identify, distinguish a website, company, its services and activities from the number of similar ones. Accordingly, a domain has to be different from other domains, i.e. it must be original.

When choosing a domain, make sure it is logically justified. It should include an indication on a website theme. You can also place a keyword relevant to your business into a domain name. This will help customers to quickly remember the name.

A domain name should be as short as possible and easy to remember, so that during a telephone conversation your partner would be able to write down the name of your domain without errors.
